Although the depiction of the chat-room as physical space is mildly clever and it definitely feels as if the whole story was built to use this gimmick , the reactions of the characters to their space is completely unconvincing. Who uses an online chat-room to lure in four potential victims into this well-thought and extremely disturbing plot to have on of the kids kill themselves. Older adult women attracts four other young people to engage with him and systematically sets about winning their confidence and undermining their lives, pushing one of them to the brink of suicide.

Unfortunately the scenes set in the real world the locations include Camden Lock and the London Zoo suicide chat room movie stilted and unconvincing, while those in the chatrooms suicide chat room movie increasingly tedious. Nakata seems ill at ease in Britain, and he and his collaborators never achieve that merging of the real, the imagined and the hallucinatory that John Frankenheimer brought off so memorably in the sequence that opens The Manchurian Candidate.

But as a movie it quickly falters. The scenes inside the room are brightly colored, more artificial looking than the rest, but the dialogue never sounds realistic; it doesn't replicate the feel of an online environment or of a connection between the users.

The "real-life" sequences are shown in muted, drab colors, but since the movie's 97 minutes are spread across five characters, none of them really comes to life. Their problems are not emotional or organic; they seem created for the story, simplistic and easily described. The movie can't find a connection between love and pain, or need and denial.

It's more interested in being shocked by the characters' activities than understanding them. It's a shallow, disappointing effort. Families can talk about the violent images of teen suicide shown in the movie.
